The Ayung River flows through several regencies namely Bangli, Badung, Gianyar, and Denpasar city, and empties directly into the Badung Strait at Padang Sanur beach.

The headwaters of the Ayung River are located in Kintamani, sourced from mountain springs, the flow of Ayung River water is of course closely related to the existence of protected forests in the Kintamani area, Bangli district which is well maintained, flowing from north to south.

Small streams or sub-watersheds that flow directly into the Ayung River are one of the sources of water to be able to keep the discharge always large. The waterfalls formed by the flow of water add to the beauty, as well as the water jumps between the beautiful cliffs along the river.

The upper reaches of the Ayung River consist of three fairly large tributaries, namely Tukad Bangkung, Tukad Menggani, and Tukad Siap. Tukad Bangkung has its headwaters in Pelaga, Tukad Menggani has its headwaters in the Chess area, and Tukad Siap has its headwaters in the Kintamani area. These tributaries come together in the Payangan area.

And, in general, the Ayung River Watershed can be divided into three areas:.

  • Upstream Region: Ranges from the Penikit area in Petang sub-district in the north to the Kintamani area which is bounded by the Kintamani-Singaraja road and Plaga in Petang sub-district which is bounded by the hilly ridge of Puncak Mangu forest. The upper reaches of the Ayung watershed have a sloping to very steep topography.
  • Central Region: Ranges from the Penikit area in Petang sub-district in the south to Abiansemal. The central area has a flat to undulating topography.
  • Lower Region: Ranges from Abiansemal to the south of Peguyangan, Tonja, Kesiman to the mouth of the Ayung River at Padanggalak Beach, East Denpasar Subdistrict which is almost entirely flat topography.
